PRODUCT AND TECHNOLOGY ROADMAP FOR WIND SUPPLY CHAIN PLAYER
Formulating roadmap to develop new products and technologies towards 2025 for a global wind turbine supply chain player
The profitability challenge is driving turbine OEMs to partner with Tier 1 suppliers on technology development for the next generation of turbine platforms. The client, a leading wind turbine supply chain player, wanted to position itself as the technology partner to turbine OEMs for which a long-term technology roadmap was required. MEC+ was engaged to facilitate the formulation of a 5-year strategic roadmap.
The purpose of a technology roadmap is to identify and prioritize activities which monetize the existing capabilities and increase the share of wallet at customer. MEC+ took a two-phased approach to build the roadmap, wherein MEC+ was the process owner and the knowledge partner:
Phase 1: Opportunity scouting and shortlisting
In phase 1, a long list of 60+ opportunities was created based on evaluation of existing portfolio, customer interviews, competitor initiatives and technology trends. The opportunities (product ideas) were then shortlisted to 25-30 based on their market attractiveness, strategy fitment and capability fitment.
Phase 2: Product detailing, roadmap development and strategic planning
In phase 2, product ideas were first prioritized for 2021-25 period based on their financial attractiveness and feasibility, followed by in-depth detailing of business model, value proposition, investments and resources required for each selected product idea. This was then put together into a Technology Masterplan to take sign-off from the Board.
The project created impact on two aspects:
- Delivery impact: Several innovative products for wind market were identified and the roadmap was well received by the Board and Senior Management. MEC+ continues to support on the annual updates to the roadmap.
- Process impact: The process was highly collaborative and MEC+ was able to transfer the commercial knowledge (e.g., customer pain points, competition) to client’s R&D team which has supported them in identifying technology concepts which are linked to concrete customer needs.
